Abstract
⺠New mechanism found for vertical transmission of insect gut symbiont. ⺠Timing of symbiont transmission finely tuned to timing of egg hatching. ⺠Intricate mother-offspring interactions involved in transmission. ⺠Our findings highlight how sociality can affect symbiosis and vice versa.
