Abstract
⺠A visual change occurred in cell biology textbooks during the period 1950s-2000s. ⺠Molecular images outnumber those obtained with microscopes. ⺠The visual change is characterized as one moving from iconic to symbolic forms. ⺠Its emergence extent and consequences are discussed.
