An optically active phthalocyaninato zinc complex containing eight chiral diethyleneglycol mono-(S)-2-methylbutyl ether moieties at the β-position of the phthalocyanine ring, namely (S)-ZnPc (1), was designed, synthesized, and characterized. Using a phase transfer method, the complex 1 was self-assembled to helical nanostructures and the self-assemble behavior was systemically investigated by electronic absorption and circular dichroism spectra, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of complex 1 and I–V properties of the helical nanostructures formed from complex 1 were also measured.
