Abstract

•New Ru(II) thiosemicarbazone complex was synthesized and characterized.•Single crystal XRD confirms the octahedral geometry of the complex.•The Ru(II) complex was developed as catalyst for one-pot conversion of aldehydes to primary amide synthesis.•Catalyst works well with 0.1 mol% and the isolated yield is up to 91%.

A convenient method for the synthesis of Ru(II) pyridoxal thiosemicarbazone complex has been described. Elemental analysis, spectral methods and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis were used to confirm the composition of the complex. The synthesized complex could act as an efficient, reusable homogeneous catalyst for transformation of aldehydes to the corresponding primary amides in the presence of NH2OH·HCl. The effect of solvent, base, temperature, time, catalyst loading and recyclability was also investigated.
