The in situ preparation of the unique complex [CoClL1][ZnI3L2] (1) (L1 = tris(1-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)-methyl)amine, L2 = hexamethylenetetramine) via redox and condensation processes of zerovalent cobalt, ZnCl2 and 1-hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethylpirazole has been reported. The crystal structure of 1, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction exhibited a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination sphere for [CoCl(L1)]+ ion and a distorted tetrahedral arrangement of the [ZnI3(L2)]− anion, both of the C1 point group symmetry. The structure of 1 was confirmed by IR, FTIR, UV–Vis, magnetic and thermal investigations.
