•Two types of mixed-ligand ruthenium(II) complexes were synthesized and investigated the interaction with DNA.•Novel ruthenium(II) complex capable hydrogen-bonding to DNA preferentially binds at adenine and/or thymine residues.•The ruthenium(II) complexes exhibit more efficient chemical and photochemical nuclease activities.
Two types of ruthenium(II) complexes cis-[Ru(bpy)2ClL]+ and cis-[Ru(bpy)2L2]2 + (L = 1,6-diaminohexane (1,6-dahx), 1-aminohexane (1-ahx)) were synthesized, and the interactions of these complexes with DNA were investigated. Importantly, cis-[Ru(bpy)2(1,6-dahx)2]2 + possessed hydrogen-bonding to DNA, preferentially binds at adenine and/or thymine residues, and exhibits more efficient nuclease activity.
