Abstract

•One face fused double-open cubane structure complex 1 was synthesized.•The supramolecular structure of 1 features 2D network.•The thermal stability and photophysical properties of complex 1 were investigated.•The experimental results show that 1 emits yellow luminescence in the solid state.

One novel tetranuclear Cd(II) complex, namely [Cd4Br2L6] (1) was fabricated by solvothermal reaction of CdBr2 salt with a 2-substituted 8-hydroxyquinolinate ligand HL. The complex was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, thermal analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction. And X-ray structural analysis shows that complex 1 exhibits a face fused double-open cubane structure. The supramolecular structure of 1 features a 2D network constructed by aromatic stacking interactions, CF…π interactions and CH…F hydrogen bonds derived from 2,4,6-trifluorophenyl group of the ligand HL. The self-assembly behavior of cadmium salts and HL in solution was also investigated using UV–vis spectroscopy. In addition, we have studied the thermal stability and photophysical properties (fluorescent emission, lifetime and quantum yield) of complex 1.
