•Novel dinuclear Co(III)–CN–Fe(III) compound was prepared and characterized.•Magnetic analysis revealed significant zero-field splitting on Fe(III).•Utilization of the compound as a potential building block is outlined.
X-ray structure and magnetic properties of a novel dinuclear heterobimetallic CoIII–CN–FeIII compound of the composition [{Co(3EtO-L5)}(μ-CN){Fe(L4)(Cl)}] (2) is reported. Adjacent complex molecules are connected through intermolecular N―H⋅⋅⋅Cl hydrogen bonds into 1D supramolecular chains. Such a compound can be considered as a potential building block for the preparation of Prussian blue analogues of high nuclearity showing interesting magnetic properties.
