Pentacoordinate Co(II) complexes possessing the {CoN3X2} chromophore (X = Cl, O) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The magnetic data confirm high magnetic anisotropy expressed through the axial zero-field splitting parameter D/hc = 50–70 cm−1. These values lie between those found in tetracoordinate and hexacoordinate Co(II) complexes.
