Abstract

•A novel electospun PSu nanofiber/nHA composite prepared with 5-Fu for gastric cancer.•Fibers obtained with different concentrations of HA.•Composites delivered the drug in sustained fashion at pH 3.•The bioactivity of prepared composites were exceptional.•The composites possessed an excellent biocompatibility and drug delivering knacks.

The application of polymeric materials for therapeutic application is growing exceptionally. In particular, the use of polymeric nanofibers has found a wide range of applications in diverse biomedical fields, such as tissue engineering, implantation of medicinal devices and artificial organs, prostheses, ophthalmology, dentistry, bone repair, and many other medical fields. This study will focus on the fabrication of polysulphone/nanohydroxyapatite (PSu/nHA) composite nanofibers by using electro spinning techniques that contain varying concentrations of HA 0–8%. The prepared nanofiber mats were characterized using FTIR, SEM and XRD. The bioactivity and drug release kinetics of the samples after loading with 5-FU drug were analyzed. Further, their effects on cancer cells were analyzed using MTT assay. The in vitro drug release showed a prolonged pattern of release thereby allowing the spread of the drugs inside the target site wherever the tumor may exist. The results from the MTT assay showed that the metabolized activities of the cancerous cells were greatly affected with negligible effect of normal cells. The results from the study showed that the prepared composite could potentially be used in the management of gastric cancer post-surgery.
