Abstract

This study compared the ability of strongly basic anion exchange (SBA) resins to remove palladium(II) ions from acidic solutions. All experiments were performed using Pd(II) ion solutions of 100 mg/dm3 in concentration. Adsorption experiments using pretreated fixed-bed columns and the batch method were applied. Of commercially available SBA resins, styrene–divinylbenzene Lewatit M-600 (gel structure), Amberlyst A-26 (macroporous) and acrylic Amberlite IRA-458 (gel), Amberlite IRA-958 (macroporous) were used in Pd(II) sorption from the chloride solutions containing hydrochloric acid of the concentration from 0.1 to 2.0 M with 1.0 and 2.0 M sodium chloride addition. The obtained results were compared with those for anion exchange resins of the same type. Furthermore, sorption and kinetic parameters were calculated. Based on the values of working ion exchange capacities obtained from the breakthrough curves, the selectivity series towards palladium(II) ions is following: Lewatit M-600 (0.0255 g/cm3) > Amberlyst A-26 (0.0230 g/cm3) > Amberlite IRA-458 (0.0060 g/cm3) > Amberlite IRA-958 (0.0040 g/cm3).
