Abstract
â¶ Rice roots show a metabolic depletion syndrome upon exposure to NaCl during vegetative growth. â¶ 30 primary metabolites are involved including sucrose, glucose, and fructose. â¶ Reduction of OsSUT1 expression improved plant performance and root sucrose levels under stress. â¶ Breeding towards salt tolerance should aim for intermediate reduction of OsSUT1 gene expression. â¶ Genetic manipulation of OsSUT1 must avoid interference with grain filling and seed germination.
