Abstract
Penicillin, the most important drug of the 20th century, is industrially produced by the fungus Penicillium chrysogenum. After more than 80 y it is starting to reveal its secrets with the help of modern genomics tools. Why did it become a penicillin producer? And, more importantly, why did it become such a good production system? Will we be able to exploit the knowledge for further development of this production system?
