Abstract

A review of the literature indicates that platelets likely play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of laminitis. This paper describes the key platelet events and mediators which contribute to breakdown of the laminae, particularly in cases secondary to endotoxemia. Identifying these targets at the cellular and subcellular level, and understanding the course of events ending in structural failure, will hopefully allow veterinarians to intervene with more specific, comprehensive laminitis prophylaxis in future.
