Using quantitative methods of determining group membership to draw biological conclusions

•We develop a biological and mathematical definition for animal group membership.•We provide example simulations demonstrating how the definition can be used.•We compute common aggregation indices using the mathematical method we propose.•Our method provides good estimates of animal grouping in many situations.
