The principles of ovine footrot control and eradication have been known for more than 70 years, and footrot has been successfully eradicated from both farms and regions. However, footrot is a complex disease and despite a large body of information, challenges still remain in its control and eradication, particularly at a regional/national level. Strains of Dichelobacter nodosus vary in their virulence and current laboratory tests do not necessarily distinguish strains adequately for eradication purposes. Furthermore, clinical assessment does not necessarily relate to the infecting D. nodosus strains. Deciding on exactly which strains of D. nodosus to target in a regional eradication programme remains a challenge. In addition, it is important to adequately manage producer expectations if regional footrot eradication programmes are to be successful.
