Abstract
The European Federation of Association of Dietitians (EFAD) currently includes 29 national dietitian and nutritionist associations from 23 countries, representing a total of 30,000 dietitians-nutritionists in the European Union. Since its creation in 1978, EFAD has actively participated in the progression of the profession of dietitian-nutritionist in Europe through actions focused on the promotion and recognition of the profession in the offi cial organs of Europe, and the defi nition of the types of dietitians-nutritionists at the different working professional areas. It has also studied the training curriculum of dietitians and nutritionists in the various European countries and is acting in a very important way in the education and academic training of future dietitians and nutritionists. Also, through the resolutions of Roskilde and Taormina, professional association members have agreed to contribute to achieving the highest quality academic training in dietitiannutritionist education, as well as establishing quality standards for higher education institutions, particularly for practice based education. With the adoption of the European Dietetic Benchmark Statement in 2005 and EFAD's direct involvement in the DIETS Thematic Network, EFAD promotes the development of dietetics on a scientifi c and professional basis, contributing to the enhancement of the dietitian-nutritionist role in Europe and thus contributing to improvement of the nutritional health of the European population.
