Abstract
Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis is recognized as being among the most serious complications of peritoneal dialysis (PD) due to the high associated morbidity and mortality. This alteration has been reported to be mainly associated with prolonged PD but the principal hypothesis is that the primary cause is the cumulative exposure of the peritoneal membrane to high glucose concentrations and the bioincompatibility of the PD solutions used. The second most widely recognized factor is peritonitis, especially if severe, recurrent, or refractory to treatment. The present article discusses risk factors, predictive markers and recommendations for prevention.
