Abstract
We performed a prospective descriptive study of 103 patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus attended in the Family and Community Medicine Clinic of the “Chiqui Gómez Lubián” Teaching Polyclinic of Santa Clara, in Villa Clara, Cuba between September 2003 and July 2005. The aim of this study was to determine the behavior of chronic renal disease in the diabetic population aged more than 18 years old. The mean age of the patients was 64.32 ± 10.83 years and 69.9 % were women. Type 2 diabetes was present in 93.2 %, hypertension in 66 %, diabetic retinopathy in 33 % and chronic renal disease in 84.4%. The results of this study show that type 2 diabetes predominantly affects elderly women with high blood pressure and chronic renal disease. The patients tended to show partial adhesion to treatment and insufficient information about the disease.
