Abstract
⺠Scale transition theory is defined and reviewed. ⺠A new analytical approach using Laplace transforms and cumulant generation functions is used. ⺠Negative exponential fitness functions are justified biologically. ⺠The biological origin of several useful probability distributions for spatial variation is discussed. ⺠Theory on how exponential fitness functions interact with different spatial distributions is developed.
