Enhancing gap model accuracy by modeling dynamic height growth and dynamic maximum tree height

► We improve the simulation of tree height in a forest succession model. ► Volume growth is explicitly allocated to diameter vs. height growth. ► Maximum tree heights are allowed to respond to changing site conditions. ► Model accuracy improved, while general applicability was not negatively influenced. ► Simulated forest productivity under climate change is quite sensitive to these changes.
