Abstract
⺠Within-species leaf construction cost and energy content increase with altitude. ⺠Leaf nitrogen concentration and specific leaf area decrease with rising altitude. ⺠Changes in leaf construction cost and related traits influence plant growth. ⺠Declining air temperature results in increasing pattern of leaf construction cost. ⺠The internal cause of rising leaf construction cost is the increase in lignin.
