Abstract
► Food webs of sandy beaches rely on imports of organic matter from the sea. ► Carrion is part of these imports and extensively used in other ecosystems. ► Scavengers react rapidly to additions of fish carcasses near the dunes. ► Birds of prey, as facultative scavengers, are an important component of food webs. ► Competition and predation by avian scavengers suppresses invertebrate consumers.
