Abstract
► Phenotypic trait variation may buffer individuals against environmental change. ► We compared the trait variation of 5 forest herbs across regions and populations. ► Most species showed higher trait variability in more favourable environments. ► Populations of favourable environments may more easily respond to habitat changes.
