Abstract
⺠Phenotypic trait variation may buffer individuals against environmental change. ⺠We compared the trait variation of 5 forest herbs across regions and populations. ⺠Most species showed higher trait variability in more favourable environments. ⺠Populations of favourable environments may more easily respond to habitat changes.
