► We review the systematics of African pygmy mice. ► Cytogenetic, ecological and molecular data are updated. ► A preliminary phylogenetic tree and tentative diagnostic characters are provided. ► The exceptional chromosomal diversity of African pygmy mice is highlighted. ► Two species show novel means of sex chromosome determination.
