Abstract
► Substrate utilization patterns of culturable bacterial communities were modified by girdling and sampling season. ► Seasonal changes in soil bacterial community were greater than those induced by girdling and stand age. ► The response of bacterial substrate metabolic function to changes in plant belowground carbon supply is seasonally dependent.
