► We monitored length distribution of fish in a Nassau grouper spawning aggregation. ► We detected recruitment of new fish in the fourth year of monitoring. ► We qualitatively validate this method against traditional census/survey count data. ► Laser size frequency analysis allows non-lethal monitoring of population recovery.
