► Montagu's harriers used mostly croplands during the wintering season at the Sahel. ► Used and most suitable areas for the species fell mostly outside protected areas. ► Most preferred habitats were more common outside than inside protected areas. ► Conservation of this species should rely on actions outside protected areas.
