Abstract
⺠Ecological monitoring is widely used but results are often equivocal. ⺠We outline the benefits of long-term monitoring using a case study. ⺠Monitoring is critical for documenting population declines and guiding management. ⺠Testing hypotheses relating to mechanisms of decline will enhance effectiveness. ⺠Greater emphasis needed on rigorous statistical analysis of monitoring datasets.
