Abstract
⺠Romania and the Carpathians are of outstanding importance for nature conservation. ⺠Socio-economic and institutional changes hamper protected area efficiency in Romania. ⺠We assessed effectiveness of Romanian protected areas using remote sensing techniques. ⺠We found substantial land-cover changes inside and outside protected areas in Romania. ⺠Results show that goals of Romania's protected area network are currently compromised.
