Abstract
The four plant-cover types differed in species richness as well as in the proportions of forbs, grasses and legumes, and annuals and perennials. N dynamics varied with time of sampling, but differences between plant-cover types were small, and neither early mowing nor ploughing had a significant effect. We conclude that as far as N dynamics in the uppermost soil layer is concerned, both species-poor and species-rich seed mixtures and natural regeneration can be recommended for set-aside.
