Abstract
⺠The biological significance of herbivore behavior in earthworms is unknown. ⺠We present the first direct evidence of aboveground herbivory in Lumbricus terrestris. ⺠Lumbricus terrestris damaged living plant parts in situations of litter shortage. ⺠The significance of the present observations needs to be tested. ⺠The implications for the composition and functioning of plant communities deserve attention.
