Abstract
► The biological significance of herbivore behavior in earthworms is unknown. ► We present the first direct evidence of aboveground herbivory in Lumbricus terrestris. ► Lumbricus terrestris damaged living plant parts in situations of litter shortage. ► The significance of the present observations needs to be tested. ► The implications for the composition and functioning of plant communities deserve attention.
