Abstract
► We investigated prey preferences of juvenile and adult western rock lobsters. ► We investigated handling time and diet quality of prey to explain prey choice. ► Large lobsters chose mussels and crabs more frequently than gastropods and urchins. ► Juvenile and medium sized mature lobsters preferred crabs over other prey items. ► Lobsters' choice in prey may be explained by handling time rather than diet quality.
