► Batoids turning performance by oscillation or undulation swimming was examined. ► Rays used either powered or unpowered turns. ► Unpowered turns used asymmetrical motions of the two pectoral fins to turn. ► Rays banked when turning. ► There was no difference in turning rate between the two propulsion modes.
