Abstract
► The potential for collective movement is evaluated in groups of individuals that tend to follow their direct predecessor. ► This behaviour is quantified with a two-state Markov chain model. ► The results show that the cohesion resulting from following the direct predecessor is weak. ► A generalized model shows that the perception of more predecessors is needed to ensure cohesion.
