Abstract

A branching process model of a bacterial population with initial lag phase is developed. Approximations are established in order to facilitate parameter estimation. The validity of approximations and estimation procedures is tested with simulated data.

► We propose a branching process model of a growing bacterial population that experiences an initial lag phase. ► We use the model to estimate lag time parameters, primarily the mean lag time. ► Approximations to the exact expressions are established in order to facilitate computation. ► The validity of approximations and estimation procedures is tested with simulated data.
