Abstract

To develop more simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) from its close relatives, this study tested the transferability of adzuki bean SSR markers into mungbean. One hundred and eighty-seven pairs of SSR primers from adzuki bean were amplified in the genome of mungbean, and 80 pairs (75%) generated repeatable and clear products, indicating a high homology between genomes of the 2 species. Of the transferable SSRs, 28 pairs were in polymorphism in 60 mungbean genotypes with a total of 81 alleles detected. The average polymorphic information content was 0.36. Based on the SSR fingerprints, these 60 accessions were divided into different groups, which agrees well with their geographical origins. The exotic accessions were all separated from the Chinese local genotypes. The polymorphic SSR markers identified in this study were of great value in analysis of genetic diversity, gene mapping, and other aspects of genetic studies in mungbean.
