Abstract
► Advanced breeding lines exhibited larger variation than commercial cultivars for grain and protein yields. ► Superior breeding lines combined high grain yield with high grain protein content without harmful pleiotrophic traits. ► Cereal protein yields can be improved to correspond that of field pea and exceed that of rapeseed. ► Plant breeding plays an increasingly important role in enhancing future protein production capacity of cereals.
