•Bioactive compounds were studied using chromatographic and mass spectrometric studies.•Moringa oleifera showed marked inhibition on pro-inflammatory cytokines.•Nitric oxide and reaction oxygen species inhibition is also seen in the study.
The immunomodulatory potential of Moringa oleifera stem bark (MO-stem bark) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced human monocytic cell line (THP-1) has been evaluated. MO-stem bark has been reported for its enhanced pharmacological activities in traditional system of medicine. The gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of MO-stem bark revealed the presence of bioactive compounds indicating its synergistic pharmacological activities. LPS induced THP-1 cell showed significant increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β), nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was observed. Pretreatment with MO-stem bark at the indicated concentration has shown marked inhibition on production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β) in LPS induced THP-1 cells. In parallel they also showed significant inhibition on NO and ROS generation which is a critical mediator of the immune response. In conclusion, this present investigation will provide an effective way in treating vascular complication associated with inflammation.
