•Preparation of bio-based polymer from vegetable oil.•A vegetable oil characterised by a high content of erucic acid was used (Broccoli).•The polymerisation is based on crosslinking with diacids under basic media.•The polyester materials exhibit Tg values around 0 °C .•The length of the crosslinking agent has a high impact on the polymer properties.
Polyester-type polymers were efficiently prepared from broccoli seed oil and several carboxylic diacids. The polyesters were prepared through a simple two-step process including oxidation of the insaturations to oxiranes followed by ring opening with dicarboxylic acids under basic conditions. Eight polymer materials derived from different fatty diacids (from 5 C to 16 C) and an aromatic diacid were prepared and characterised. Rubber-type crosslinked biobased materials exhibited low Tg values comprised between −5 and +5 °C depending on the diacid type and length.
