Abstract
Phosphate biosorption of Hydrilla verticillata was investigated and compared with its bioaccumulation characteristics. Results obtained from the biosorption isotherms and kinetics showed that maximal phosphate biosorption was 286 mg kg−1, approximately equal to 6–9% of the phosphate bioaccumulation. The biosorption mainly occurred within 5 h, and was highest during the first 30 min. The initial phosphate concentration was an important factor affecting the biosorption process. Phosphate biosorption on H. verticillata was not the main phosphate removal mechanism in our experiments, but it cannot be ignored.
