Abstract

•None of the Carica papaya cultivars has natural-resistance to PRSV.•Vasconcellea cauliflora source of resistance for PRSV.•Resistant individuals completely immune to the virus.•None of the duplicate gene interaction.•Pusa Nanha × V. cauliflora (PNV9) and CP 50 × V. cauliflora (CPV23) segregation ratio of 13:3 inhibitory gene interaction.

The current investigation was undertaken on “transmission of resistance to papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) in intergeneric populations of Carica papaya and Vasconcellea cauliflora”. In this study, the three F2 populations raised from S1 inbreds were screened and the desired male and female plants were selected for sibmating. The F2 populations of various combinations segregated for susceptibity and resistance to papaya ringspot virus in two different ratios. The cross combination CO 7 × V. cauliflora (CO7V3) exhibited a 15:1 ratio (duplicate gene action) and the crosses Pusa Nanha × V. cauliflora (PNV9) and CP 50 × V. cauliflora (CPV23) exhibited 13:3 ratio (inhibitory gene action). The study revealed multi-genic inheritance of resistant to PRSV which uniquely exhibit inter-genic interactions.
