Abstract
⺠We assess the impact of a costly energy substitute for a non-renewable resource on the sustainability of consumption. ⺠Sustainability is not guaranteed even if learning-by-using reduces the costs of the resource substitute. ⺠Richer countries should switch later to the renewable substitute. ⺠Poorer countries are more likely unsustainable, implying benefits of technology transfer.
