Abstract

After a brief overview on development history of solid-state light sources, an light emitting diodes (LED)-backlit liquid crystal display television (LCD-TV) and a diffractive micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) (GxL) laser projector are characterized for key performance indicators for their light sources, with highlight on thermal noise caused by Brownian motion of GxL ribbons. Then, we will propose a solution for thermal challenges in such a flat panel display using light sources with moderate power dissipation density, followed by discussion on necessity of advanced thermal spreader in cooling lasers with extremely high power dissipation density.
