Abstract
► Presence of Mycobacterium leprae in the environment by using PCR targeting 16S rRNA. ► Viable M. leprae were found in the areas where active leprosy patients reside. ► Similar genotype of M. leprae found in soil and patients residing in the same area. ► This could help in understanding the transmission link between patient and environment. ► Study suggests that soil may acts as a potential reservoir of M. leprae.
