Abstract
⺠Oribatid mite phylogeny was studied using 18S rDNA. ⺠Defensive structures (e.g. mineralization, ptychoidy) evolved convergently. ⺠Recent predatory pressure maintains these defensive structure. ⺠Strong predator defense allows oribatid mites to live in 'enemy-free space'.
