Abstract
► Hornbills are charismatic birds, and an important study system in ecology and conservation biology. ► We present the first complete phylogeny for all 61 hornbill species based on nuclear and mtDNA sequences. ► Topology conflicts with current taxonomic treatments but closely matches vocal variation across the family. ► We present a new arrangement for six major hornbill clades and reveal Tockus, Aceros and Penelopides are non-monophyletic. ► Our findings resolve some longstanding problems in hornbill systematics.
