Abstract
⺠Speciose genera within the moss family Funariaceae are polyphyletic entities. ⺠The sporophytic characters thought to be highly conserved are shown to be phylogenetically labile. ⺠Selection for simple sporophyte may be the driving force underlying the diversification of this family.
