Abstract
⺠First molecular results on sponges from Lake Tanganyika show unique COI and ITS2 haplotypes. ⺠Two clades contain widely distributed genera and endemic lineage. ⺠Monophyly of Lake Tanganyika sponges rejected. ⺠Higher taxonomic structure for freshwater sponges called into question.
