Abstract
► Thirteen genes support the monophyly of the Centropomidae (sensu Greenwood, 1976). ► Niphon spinosus is not related to Lates or the Serranidae; instead, it is sister to Percidae. ► Neither Siniperca nor Glaucosoma are centropomids, or their sister group. ► The centropomids were not grouped with the ambassids. ► Instead, they were placed among species such as carangoids, flatfishes, and barracudas.
