Abstract
⺠Thirteen genes support the monophyly of the Centropomidae (sensu Greenwood, 1976). ⺠Niphon spinosus is not related to Lates or the Serranidae; instead, it is sister to Percidae. ⺠Neither Siniperca nor Glaucosoma are centropomids, or their sister group. ⺠The centropomids were not grouped with the ambassids. ⺠Instead, they were placed among species such as carangoids, flatfishes, and barracudas.
